“Beloved” celebrates all love, from maternal nurture to romance to platonic intimacy. A new take on the highly popular “Little Wonders” style brings wholesome themes of warmth, nostalgia, and humor. Using color as mood and composition as language, the paintings act as vignettes about either the umbilical bond, budding love, or the connection between kindred spirits. Together, the series reminds us that the love we receive in our earliest years informs, in part, the love we will eventually give. I was astounded by how quickly and clearly I recalled the teachings of my mother’s love throughout the early stages of a new relationship that stumbled into my life in early spring. Henceforth, my heart has spent the summer somewhere between beloved and bereft while I created this series inspired by Harry, in memory of Ellie, and in celebration of all precious love: past, present, and future. And while love can never be lost, I hope this series reminds us to cherish it while we are here. As this summer marks 10 years since losing Ellie, 10% of this show will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, in her honor.
