Piece Statement

"You will never know if fate is real unless you are willing to surrender to the universe. Sometimes nature knows the way, and you have to let yourself be carried by forces more powerful than you instead of fighting against them. Maybe you’re in Gordes, FR, and you almost don’t go because it’s a hilltop village and it’s the windiest day ever. But you do, and quite literally get blown into a castle where you meet the French version of yourself at a pop-up art show of local talent. She has a gorgeous husband, and he has a single brother… oh la la."

"A glorious sunrise is the visual epitome of peace, all the while emitting so much energy that it can be concurrently described as all-powerful. I don’t think that’s a coincidence, and I think we humans can learn from that. Maybe protecting your peace is the surest way to remain in your highest power."

Power of Peace is part of the Homecoming Series, viewable here.

"It’s ok to stay tethered to things that are calming during intentional efforts to breach the comfort zone. In France, it looked like planning just one activity in advance: kayaking on a brightly colored body of water. I knew my nervous system would need it after a long week exploring new towns. A bit like putting on a fuzzy sweater and calling a friend after a first date."

"This one is so much fun, all the time. They have all the jokes, games, activities, friends, toys, hobbies - always with a packed schedule of plans that can’t be interrupted. They might bring you along for the festivities and you’ll have a great time, but don’t think it’s because they’re interested in growing anything serious with you. Peter Pans never never grow up. They won’t slow down and compromise on any part of their bachelor/ette lifestyle to make room for you and your needs. Grown-up goals are too scary for them, and they’ll feed on the imaginary fountain of youth until they wake up one day, alone. You deserve better, Wendy. Fly away"

"Part of bravely becoming your best self is meeting yourself where you’re at. If something that used to work for you doesn’t sit right anymore, you have to diverge from it and explore something that honors your status quo. In other words, sometimes it is broke, and you have to fix it."

Divergence is part of the Evolve Series, viewable here.

"As a former gymnast, trust me when I tell you, new muscles don’t show up overnight. They need regular toning, nourishment, and rest. Consistency is key. Big life changes usually require you to build new muscles, and not just physical ones. Mental and emotional fitness are actually more important. And those invisible muscles need just as much consistent attention to grow. New habits, tracking them, and journaling about them are all things that are now a part of my weekly routine and I can feel my mental fortitude toning."

"Ironically, even though I’ve never been more alone, I’ve never felt more surrounded by love and support. I got there by choosing the right environment for my personality and health and wellness habits. By choosing a warm community for my work. And choosing a lifestyle that protects my peace but also welcomes new connections."

"Komorebi is a Japanese term that loosely translates to the dappled sunlight through tree leaves. I think of this as the earthy version of sunlight sparkle on the water, which is easily my favorite glimmer. But whereas the water reflects all the sunlight in an intense, uniform way, there's something more unique and interactive about the sunlight that sneaks its way to us through leaves. It's fickle, playful, and nuanced by the wind, like a tickle or a dance."

"Your gut is your greatest resource during new experiences. A waiter reminded me of this in a little beach town when I sat down for a late lunch, and I said I didn’t know if I needed a coffee or a cocktail, to which he responded “if you have to ask, you already know”. I promptly ordered a martini called “the prostitute” and was reminded of a great piece of dating advice: after a first date, ask your body and you will know. Were you relaxed or tense? Was your body open towards them or closed away from them? Do your cheeks hurt from smiling or does your head hurt from fake laughing? Do you have butterflies? If you kissed, did you get goosebumps? Your body knows, just ask."

"I think there’s a lesson to be learned from city neon. Think about it: It’s job is to stick out. To say “I AM HERE”. To make itself known when it would otherwise be engulfed, bypassed, and forgotten about in the darkness. Most of all, it welcomes people in, who otherwise wouldn’t know they were needed. Vulnerability is neon. It lets people know you need them."

"Hot, then cold. Texting nonstop, then gets quiet. Lovey-dovey, then blaming you for all their problems. Seems to enjoy a classy night out and then insists that they’ve always been more into camping... These clowns are plagued with immaturity and have no idea who they are. They will try on all sorts of different hats, fits, and faces trying to figure it out while they drag you along for companionship because they’re too scared to be alone. If they’re waffling left and right and you never know what’s coming next, trust me, they don’t know either. They’re just putting on a big damn show, and you need to get out of that circus before their performance makes you too dizzy to find the exit."

Transient

Piece Statement

"One of the hard truths of growing up is realizing that nothing, (absolutely nothing), lasts forever. And even harder, we never get to know how long we have with each person, place, idea, style, thing, whatever it is, before it's gone. This piece, for example, showed me that my process had outgrown the technique behind the style I started with. I was forced to pivot to another process about a quarter of the way through that served my interests and needs a lot better. In other words, I had to do another thing we all struggle with: I had to let go."

"Several artist friends of mine made me aware of how special, unique, and worthy of repurposing my tape is in summer 2021. Ever since, I’ve been preserving the tape I peel off of pieces and using them to wrap around found frames to create brand new surfaces. I am stunned at the diary-like objectivity they have, as they provide mementos of past works and, altogether, serve as time stamps of my creative process."

"Oh the joy when a whim goes your way! If your gut tickles with “yes” energy, the risk will give way to reward. Your new French bestie insists you visit the town where natural pigments are sold, and then join her for a vernissage that evening? To hell with the itinerary. Date number two is going well, but the dinner is over? Make up a craving for ice-cream, get a cone, and walk off the calories hand-in-hand.

"Also known as “breadcrumber” this is the one who will reliably show up, but only to give you the bare minimum - just enough to keep a flickering ember of affection alive. It’s wrenching because you see their potential so clearly, but your gut knows you have to take what they’re giving you at face value, and it just isn’t enough. This is the one that forces you to break your own heart by walking away because they never will."

Cactus Patch

Piece Statement

"I’m still trying to figure out why I’m so obsessed with cacti. It might have something to do with the extra sense of refreshment and vitality they symbolize, being so green in typically arid environments. Or it could be the way they paint the perfect picture of emotion, being both prickly and pretty at the same time. Or it could be the adorably amorphous, unique shapes they form, which seem delightfully improbable and thus perpetually magical to come across. "

Piece Statement

"On birthdays it’s typical to reflect on another “trip around the sun” and celebrate the beginning of a new one. As a night owl, I do some of my best thinking, writing, and creating by the light of the moon. Not only that, she is a powerful and reliable teacher in patience, braving phases, and trusting in the cyclical nature of things. Today, 2/14/23, I’m looking forward to my 29th year of lunar lessons."

"How you rise matters. Sure, a rocket that shoots to the top in no time is impressive and all. But don't doubt the gratification, humilty, growth, and sustainability of a slow rise. A gradual ascension, like that of hot air balloon, let's you enjoy the view from every point along to the way to the top, making the perspective once you get there all the more rewarding."
